We regret that Bukele’s response to the Constitutional Chamber is “weapons and violence,” says Portillo Cuadra | News from El Salvador

Opposition deputies called it “political bullying” for the president of the republic to publish on Twitter the photo of heavily armed soldiers following a chamber resolution suspending Walter Araujo’s candidacy for the New Ideas party deputy. They claim that Bukele is not giving up on the 9F’s stance, going back to decades when the military was used to oppress.

For the ARENA delegates, René Portillo Cuadra; Rodolfo Parker, of the PDC; and Schafik Hándal, of the FMLN, shows the publication of the President of the Republic, Nayib Bukele, of a group of armed soldiers, minutes after the Constitutional Chamber decided to suspend the candidacy of Walter Araujo as a deputy for New Ideas, ”Van on the side of Bukele, “inability to dialogue” and a return to decades when the military “used dictatorial governments to suppress”.

“Actually, this image that the President (Bukele) published of military personnel with long arms and war suits, all he does is boycott the judiciary in El Salvador, what he wants is to intimidate the Constitutional Chamber for resolutions he has passed. we are sorry that the president’s response to the Constitutional Chamber’s verdict is weapons and violence, ”said Portillo Cuadra.

He added that when a leader uses violence and political power to intimidate another state body, it is because he does not have “the necessary arguments to rebut judicial decisions.”

“In the case of Walter Araujo it should be said as a summary, the Chamber has ruled that Mr. Walter Araujo has no morality to run for deputy in El Salvador or a public elected official, judicial decisions are respected, we love or not, but since the president, due to his authoritarian and totalitarian calling, does not respect the decisions of the other organs of the state, we must tell the Salvadoran people that the message of violence and brutality used by the president is only given in totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, where democracy and people are in the background, ”said Portillo Cuadra.

Parker, for his part, said that a few days after the military raid on the legislative chamber on February 9, 2020, Bukele increased his inability to engage in dialogue as a tool to solve rather than correct Salvadorans’ problems.

“Instead of correcting, it has become much more serious, the existence of a republican system of government has been put in grave danger, the danger has arrived and the border has been crossed, it is delicate, because when there is a concentration of power, more hunger is happening, more violence is happening, that’s where Bukele is leading us, that photo he uploaded is a demonstration of what I’m saying, ”Parker complained.

While Hándal says that Bukele’s image of the military posted on Twitter is “ a threat ” that is bringing the country back to a situation of hopelessness like the one El Salvador experienced in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s with the military’s commitment to the rights of the population, but to intimidate them.

“What does it say there? Anyone who opposes what the king says will be oppressed, that happened in the sixties, seventies and eighties, when a dissent from the official thought was a candidate to have the pack of the armed forces,” no longer as an institution that guarantees respect for the civil power, but just a pack that is available to the king and throws it at you whenever he wants, the photo says, ”said Hándal.
