Watch this 1967 Ford GT40 Mark III race its younger competition

When was the last time you had the pleasure of going to a 1967 Ford GT40 Mark III taking on a 2005 Ford GT on the drag strip? I will wait.

If your answer was ‘never’ as it probably was, then you’re about to have a sweet surprise this Saturday afternoon.

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California hosted a long race day at the Santa Margarita Ranch runway – true, it seemed, sort of all that could To go wrong did To go wrongBut that does not mean that the museum has not been able to put on a spectacular show with those cars did break it up. Oh no.

As the museum notes, only seven Ford GT40 Mark IIIs were generally built, and the model in the video is one of only four built left-hand drive. And what makes it even rarer is the fact that it is street legal. But it also inspired the 2005 Ford GT40 making its appearance in this video courtesy of Doug DeMuro. It’s not every day you come across the original model on the car that inspires it decades later.

Now let’s talk about some of the different specifications.

Motor

  • 1967: 289 cubic inches
  • 2005: 5.4-liter V8

Transfer

  • 1967: ZF 5-speed gearbox
  • 2005: 6-speed manual gearbox

power

  • 1967: 306 horsepower
  • 2005: 550 hp

Top speed

  • 1967: 165 mph
  • 2005: 205 mph

0-60mph time

  • 1967: 5.3 seconds
  • 2005: 3.3 seconds

With all that in mind, let’s watch the video. They go through some history, so if you want to get a good look at the goods, the drag racing starts at 4:30 am.

I won’t spoil the results for you, but I can guarantee it will be at least one little surprising. And that you will have fun. The exhaust note from the GT40 is absolutely beautiful; I honestly can’t get enough.
