Washtenaw County district attorney announces office will no longer file charges for consensual sex work

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – The Washtenaw County prosecution will no longer press charges against those who work in the sex industry by mutual consent.

“We are focused on crime that really harms the community,” said Washington County prosecutor Eli Savit.

No charges will be brought against sex workers by mutual consent, officials said.

“We say, we don’t charge consensual sex exchanges for money,” Savit said.

The prosecutor will still deal with cases against human traffickers and those holding people against their will.

Sandra Ramocan works closely with sex workers at the “Alternative for Girls” organization and she believes it’s a step in the right direction – as long as the sex is fully consensus.

“As an agency, we say we think it’s a good thing, you know, because we work with these sex work survivors, and they come over to us to get some services. These criminal records are following them, ”said Ramocan.

“I have no tolerance for human traffickers. They will be a priority with our prosecutor’s office. We’re going after them. This policy aims to ensure that we do not see an increase in human trafficking and that we know when it is happening, ”said Savit.
