Warning in place as the surf rises to 10 meters along the north and west coast of smaller islands

A new swell in the northwest has triggered a wave warning this afternoon off the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai and the north coast of Maui, with a second swell on its heels, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said they expect surf of 7 to 10 meters on the north coast and 6 to 8 meters on the west coast today. Waves on the south and east coasts will range from just 1 to 4 feet, the service said.

As the swell moves along the island chain, surf advice may be issued this afternoon for the western shores of the island of Hawaii.

A smaller swell in the northwest will continue to bring big surf along exposed north and west coasts on Sunday, according to the Weather Service. The waves will abate Monday as the two swells pass, but another could reach the islands and produce advice-level surf by mid-next week.

Officials are warning of ocean water spilling over parts of beaches from time to time, significant coastal faults and dangerous currents.

A small craft advisory remains in effect today for all waters of Hawaii until 6pm.

Meanwhile, showers over the island of Hawaii and East Maui will intensify today, spreading across the rest of the island chain on Sunday afternoon, forecasters said. Moisture will linger in the state on Monday, with a decrease in showers likely Tuesday.
