Warm Tuesday ends with light rain

Happy World Meteorological Day!

It was on this date in 1950 that the World Meteorological Organization was developed as a specialized agency within the United Nations. The WMO does a world of good, such as efforts to mitigate natural disasters through better warning systems, standardization of international weather observation equipment and observations, and, of course, climate change research.

Several years ago I had the privilege of visiting the WMO headquarters in Geneva and interviewing the Secretary General in his office, and it is amazing what the WMO has achieved over the past seven decades.

Slightly closer to home, although we’ll have more cloud cover on Tuesday than we’ve seen together for the past three days, we still get partial sun at times, and the unusually warm air mass is still with us. As such, today’s highs will reach the mid-60s. However, we have a southeast wind of 8 to 13 mph and, as you guys know on the east side, that early spring breeze keeps you much cooler when you get out of those cold waters of the Great Lakes.

Sunrise is Tuesday at 7:31 AM. Sunset is at 7:49 PM

On Tuesday evening it will be mostly cloudy, with scattered showers. The amount of rain will be light and won’t dent the moderate drought and abnormally dry conditions experienced in much of southeastern Michigan (Metro Airport has received only 0.03 inches of rain so far this month). Lows will be near 50 degrees, which is our average HIGH at this time of year! The southeast wind continues, at 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday morning scattered showers will end, and then it will be partly cloudy and windy. A stray shower or thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out north of M-59 and west of I-75, but most of us should stay dry Wednesday afternoon. The maximum temperature will be almost 70 degrees.

It will be partly cloudy on Wednesday evening, with lows in the upper 40s.

Thursday it will be cloudy and it will start to rain late in the afternoon. The highs will be in the low 60s.

Thursday night rain reigns – this will be the good soaked rain we badly need, with an inch of water possible. Lows will be in the low 40s.

The rain stops on Friday afternoon and it gets windy. The highs will be in the low 50s.

Friday night gets mostly clear, with lows in the mid-1930s.

It will be partly cloudy on Saturday to begin with, and will be mostly cloudy afterwards. There is a small chance of a shower late on Saturday. The highs will be in the low 50s.

Showers are likely to run from Saturday night until at least the first half of Sunday, peaking on Sundays near 50 degrees.
