NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) – Starting Friday, people can get COVID-19 vaccines at select Walmart pharmacies in Tennessee.
This is part of a new federal pharmacy program to get the vaccine to market faster, and 121 Walmart pharmacies will be part of the program.
These vaccines are free, but by appointment only. It will be based on what stage of the distribution process your country is in – in Davidson County, for example, people 70 and older can now make arrangements to get theirs. Click here to make an appointment.
“Looking at geographic distribution across the state, there are 150 Walmarts in nearly every county,” said Dr. Lisa Piercey, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Health. “Especially in our need [and] our rural counties are much more likely to have Walmart than the other chain pharmacies. “
Dr. Piercey said 30 more Walmart pharmacies in the state should begin vaccinating in the coming weeks. She said two thirds of the 70+ population has still not been vaccinated.
These vaccines are in addition to those the state is already getting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked with the states to choose different pharmacies, and they were selected based on several things, such as their ability to reach people most at risk of actually getting sick from COVID -19.
