Villeda Morales Airport is ready to operate international flights

San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport is ready to operate international flights.

Since December 23, the terminal resumed domestic operations. Currently CM Airlines is the only airline operating flights to Roatán, La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa from San Pedro Sula.

Although storms Eta and Iota severely damaged Villeda Morales, forcing it to remain closed for 47 days, the terminal is slowly recovering its strength and gearing up to become the most active in Honduras once again.

The authorities explained that domestic flights have been possible since December 23 aircraft category A and B., which are generally composed of turboprop aircraft.

Since then they have been working under the supervision of the Honduran Civil Aeronautics Agency (Ahac) and the Central American Corporation for Air Navigation Services (Cocesna) to safely rehabilitate commercial, passenger and cargo aviation.

In this sense, “after completing the calibration process of the Cocesna laboratory aircraft, they have decided to make the airport operational as of yesterday at 5:00 PM with RNP (formerly ARNAV), which can be used by national and international airlines. with the capabilities and certifications to perform these procedures and thus be able to operate aircraft categories C and D during the day from sunrise to sunset, ” states the statement of the Honduran Airport Infrastructure and Services Company (Ehisa).

The letter also emphasizes that international flights are still possible with limitations, described in the various published Notams, with acceptable levels of operational security, allowing all airlines capable of performing the said procedures to operate.

Michael Wehmeyer, president of the Honduran Airline Association (Ahla), stated that the airlines were waiting for approval from Class C and D aircraft to do flight planning.

It should be noted that airlines American Airlines, Sosa and Lanhsa have announced through a statement the start of operations from January 14-15 from Villeda Morales.

“After the pandemic, many airlines had to increase their capacity, their number aircraft and crew available too and there are service standards that airlines have to meet, ”he said.

Wehmeyer said that so far all airlines operating in Villeda are willing and interested to return as it is very profitable for them.

Mónica Martel de Aguilar, member of the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies of Honduras, He believed that failure to operate international flights has consequences for the sale of tickets and tourist packages.

“The flights departing from San Pedro Sula have an attractive price, the prices from Tegucigalpa and Roatán are higher,” said Martel.
