View Hummer EV prototypes CrabWalk on a public road

One of the coolest features of GMC Hummer’s new electric vehicles is CrabWalk, but we’ve yet to see it in action in the wild. Well, until now.

In short, “Crab Mode” tilts all four Hummer wheels to the side, so that when the throttle is applied, the solid EV moves diagonally. It takes four-wheel steering to a whole new level, and the whole goal is to use this mode to more easily maneuver tricky obstacles when driving off-road. I imagine it will be a pretty handy party trick too.

But someone sent a clip to The Fast Lane Truck on YouTube showing this mode for the first time on public roads. You can check it out below:

So far everything we’ve seen has been released directly by GM and either digitized or filmed on a closed circuit; you have to take all that with a grain of salt, because that doesn’t show anything in the wild.

However, this new clip shows a row of Hummer EV trucks passing through heavy traffic. They are equal parts charming and creepy, kind of the way I’ve always felt watching dancers move in sync. It shouldn’t be possible to move like that, but it is.

Whatever the case, it’s nice to see these trucks doing their dance on the road after what looks like a successful day driving through the sand. We have yet to see what the CrabWalk feature looks like when deployed halfway through an obstacle on an off-road trail, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

But it also makes for a nice little experience on the go. I would love to see the faces of people totally unfamiliar with this feature when they first witness the scratch mold on the road.
