Duke lost his third game in a row on Saturday, dropping 70-65 in Louisville, dropping to 5-5 in the season – the worst start in more than 35 years. The game was close all the time, and Duke missed three possible starting or tying shots in the last minute.
This immediately led to a difficult moment with the media.
During the press conference of coach Mike Krzyzewski, a student reporter from Duke’s newspaper, The Chronicle, Coach K asked a question, resulting in an exchange between the two.
“I’m just curious what the next step forward is for the team,” the reporter asked.
“Yeah, why don’t we just evaluate this game,” said Krzyzewski. “I’m not into what our next step forward is at the moment. We just finished a hard-fought match. I don’t know when … What’s your major? “
The reporter didn’t answer right away, so Krzyzewski asked again.
“What’s your major at Duke?” Asked coach K. When the reporter again did not respond, he asked, “What is your hardest lesson?”
“Econ,” the reporter replied.
“Suppose you just had the toughest econ test in the world,” Krzyzewski said, “and as you walked away someone asked you,“ What’s your next step? See what I mean? Do you have a little empathy? “
“Just give us time to evaluate this game,” he continued, “and then we’ll figure out – as we always try to do – what the next step will be. The next step, of course, is to prepare for Georgia Tech. How we prepare for that – that’s what we need to find out. ”
