Video captures the moment when grandmother chases, takes handbag snatcher and throws him to the ground before taking back her bag

Video captured as a heroic grandmother chased a potential thief after allegedly attempting to grab her bag from an outside table where the woman was eating.

The woman was reportedly engaged in her own business as the suspect approached her table, grabbed her purse and fled the scene on foot.

He didn’t get very far.

What are the details?

According to Australia’s Seven News, the incident took place outside Pimpama Tavern on Australia’s Gold Coast on January 19.

CCTV footage captured as the woman takes off her shoes, chases the potential thief and picks him up on the ground after taking her bag from the table and leaving.

As the sidewalk struggles down the road, the woman can be seen putting the man – later identified as being from Upper Coomera – in what appears to be a head lock before pulling back her bag and leaving the scene.

The suspect then gets into a white truck and leaves the scene.

The woman, who was celebrating her birthday, suffered cracked ribs, cuts and bruises from the scuffle.

Starting at 60 reported that the woman is a grandmother to at least 10 grandchildren.

Queensland police were able to locate the suspect and arrest him on charges of theft.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday that the suspect was identified as Troy Charles Bennett.

Bennett appeared in court on Wednesday, where he reportedly hid in court restrooms for more than an hour before emerging wearing a coronavirus mask and sunglasses.

“He tried to hide behind two prosecutors when they left the court, despite their efforts to stay away from cameras,” the paper said. “Bennett then ran into the Mal Burke Car Park across the court.”
