A Strange Outage Hits Internet Users in the Northeast US It’s not entirely clear what’s going on, but it’s certainly annoying.

On Tuesday around noon, the malfunction reports started to pour in DownDetector, which tracks online service outages. But it is not limited to one company; users reported problems with Comcast, Google, Zoom, YouTube, Slack, Amazon Web Services and many others. (AWS’s own status page indicates that its services are working normally, for what it’s worth.)

While the cause (or causes) has not been confirmed, a severed Verizon fiber optic cable in Brooklyn, New York, could be the culprit. Verizon Customer Support confirmed on Twitter that one of his cables was cut, and customers said they were notified of the malfunction by email.

Not all services, nor all users, seemed to be equally affected. Even among the New York-based Gizmodo staff, the problem just seems … weird. One editor had fine access to Slack, but the Google services were not working. Others experienced slower response times while still being able to access all the services they tried to use.

At the time of writing, several services, including Google and Zoom, appear to be coming back online. Others remain inaccessible to some users.

A Verizon spokesperson said in an email that they are investigating the issue.

An AWS spokesperson said the problem was related to an internet service provider and not AWS itself. In an email, a Google spokesperson echoed AWS, saying in a statement, “We are aware of reports of issues accessing some Google products, but have not found any issues with our services. We will continue with the to research. “

We’ve also contacted Comcast for clarification of the outage and will update when we hear anything. If the outage affects you, let us know what you see in the comments.

Update Jan. 26 at 1:25 p.m. ET: AWS confirmed that issues customers encountered were related to an ISP, not AWS. Google said it ‘s is investigating the problem but found no problems with its services.
