Valve’s Steam data for December points to a huge dip for Linux Gaming Marketshare

VALVE -

Valve just released their Steam Survey figures for December 2020 and it is a huge disappointment to Linux gamers if the numbers are indeed accurate.

According to Valve’s published figures, Linux market share on Steam was only 0.57%, or a 0.33% drop from the previous month. The December 2020 figures show that Windows rallies just over 1.6%, while macOS is losing 1.31% market share to 2.14%. These numbers are hugely upset for both Linux and macOS gaming.

It’s possible that these numbers are a little off, as we’ve seen many times in the past, where Valve later revises their numbers based on different explanations. But it’s also possible that there was indeed a massive surge in Windows gamers around the holiday season and various game sales, etc. There are also those who continue to question Valve’s Steam Survey techniques, among other concerns.

But in any case, with 0.9% previously and hoping to crack the 1.0% barrier for Steam Linux gaming soon, the numbers are a disappointment to non-Windows gamers right now.

So at least from the Steam Survey results as published now, the Linux gaming market share has fallen back to 0.57% after seeing a steady rise since the introduction of Steam Play (Proton), bringing many more games to Linux. to be possible.
