Vaccination sites open in 2 new locations in Duval County

Two vaccination centers run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency open Sunday morning in Duval County.

The satellite locations moved from the Westside and Northwest Jacksonville to the Carver Center on 5th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach and the Oceanway Center on Sago Avenue West on the Northside.

According to FEMA, the locations are open for 10 days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – through March 23. The sites offer the Pfizer vaccine, and each site can administer up to 500 injections per day.

The walk-up sites do not require an appointment and shots are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kelsy Adams, who works in higher education, waited in her car for the opening of the Carver Center. She and a friend traveled about two hours from Gainesville to get vaccinated.

“Everything is full, yes. It’s just … the medical facility and stuff, you just can’t get in there, there are people who have a higher priority, ”Adams said. So let’s try it [the Jacksonville Beach site]Nothing else, we go to each other to get something to eat and drive back. “

An hour before the site opened at the Carver Center, the line began to grow and wrap around the building.

People who live on the beaches said it’s about accessibility.

“It’s a relief. We’ve all waited a bit, so it’s nice,” said Jacksonville Beach resident Liz Root. “I still want us to be careful until a majority of us are vaccinated. I just don’t want that. it’s free for everyone. “

“We need to have it available to everyone so that we can get back to doing what we need to do,” said Burl White, resident of Ponte Vedra Beach.

There was no line at the Oceanway Center on Sunday morning when News4Jax came by.

The two original satellite sites at the Normandy Community Center and Hammond Senior Center will return for second dose recordings.

FEMA opened the two satellite sites in partnership with the federally-aided vaccination clinic in the Gateway Mall on the north side. The Norwood Avenue location is open seven days a week from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and can take 3,000 shots per day. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is offered at the Gateway Mall site, not the Carver and Oceanway centers.

Starting Monday, the age at which people are eligible for vaccinations at all locations in Florida will drop to 60.
