US stocks end slightly higher

Major US stock indices rose slightly higher on Tuesday, although weakness in technology and social media companies’ stocks slackened gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 60.00 points, or 0.2%, to close out at 31068.69 after tumbling between small gains and losses during the day.

The broad S&P 500 tipped 1.58 points, or less than 0.1%, to 3801.19. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 36.00 points or 0.3% to 13072.43.

All three indexes closed at record highs on Friday, but retreated early this week.

Investors generally expect stocks to rise this year as the introduction of vaccines and new government spending help the economy recover from the disruption caused by the pandemic. Still, some brace themselves for the volatility in the coming months amid risks stemming from high valuations in parts of the market, high rates of coronavirus cases and political uncertainty following last week’s attack on the Capitol.
