US reports new daily record, for the first time more than 4,000 deaths from coronavirus

The United States again reported a new record for daily deaths from coronavirus on Friday, above 4,000 for the first time.

The US registered 4,085 deaths from the coronavirus on Thursday, according to a count of Johns Hopkins University, on top of the previous record of 3,865 set Wednesday.

In total, the US has reported 365,208 deaths from the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. A forecast of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts that 405,000 to 483,000 deaths will be reported by January 30.

The record comes as more states report new cases of a new, more aggressive form of the coronavirus. Georgia and Pennsylvania both reported cases of infection with the variant this week.

Experts say the species is more contagious, but it is not thought to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, the US is working to ramp up the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine after it has started slowly. As of January 7, more than 5.9 million people have their first vaccine doses.
