US Connecticut District Attorney John Durham announced his resignation from that position on Friday.
He was appointed as an interim US Attorney in November 2017 and then by President Donald Trump to the US Attorney post in February 2018.
Durham spent more than 38 years as a federal prosecutor in Connecticut before taking the role of US Attorney.
“My career was as fulfilling as I could have ever imagined when I graduated from law school in 1975,” Durham said in a press release. “Much of that satisfaction comes from all the people I have been blessed to share this workplace with, and from our partner law enforcement agencies. My love and respect for this Office and the vital work being done here has never waned. It has been a tremendous honor to serve as a US attorney and a prosecutor for that, and I will miss it very much. “
Durham’s resignation is not unexpected. Earlier this month, the Justice Department asked U.S. attorneys appointed under President Donald Trump to step down so that the Biden administration could present its own nominations for those posts.
Durham was appointed last year by then Attorney General William Barr as a special council to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe. According to the Associated Press, he will remain in that capacity.
The resignation as US Attorney for Connecticut is effective February 28 at midnight.
First U.S. Assistant Attorney Leonard Boyle will act as the Acting U.S. Attorney.
