Update for Wednesday March 3rd

Oklahoma reported 747 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. The state’s cumulative number of cases is 425,747, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

The health department reported on Wednesday that it will change how it reports COVID-related deaths. OSDH will use a Provisional Death Count so that the state’s reported deaths match those of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and provide a “more current picture” of the impact of the disease in Oklahoma.

Before Wednesday, there was a nearly 2,500 difference between the death toll reported by OSDH and the toll reported by the CDC. The preliminary number of deaths on Wednesday was 7,035.

The provisional death certificate provided by the CDC is based on death certificates. From the OSDH: “As the number of cases increased towards the end of 2020, our investigative epidemiologists began to encounter larger numbers of incomplete data that required in-depth investigation. This process has subsequently caused an increasing divergence in the OSDH death rate.”

“We feel now is an opportune time to make this transition in our reporting system so that there is no idea that we are minimizing these deaths,” said state epidemiologist Dr. Jared Taylor. “We recognize that each of these deaths is a tragedy and has a great cost to that person’s family and friends, to the state of Oklahoma, and to the world.”
