UMass School of Medicine Joins Moderna Vaccine Clinical Trials – NBC New England

The UMass School of Medicine in Worcester will enroll in Moderna’s clinical trial of the adolescent coronavirus vaccine next month.

Cambridge-based biotech company Moderna said adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 will receive the experimental vaccine in the hope that it will be safe and effective enough to be administered to adolescents before the 2021 school year.

According to the list on clincaltrials.gov, 3,000 children will participate in the study to take the first step in the vaccination process for young people.

Enrollment begins in February at the UMass School of Medicine. The test is being conducted at approximately 15 locations in the US, some of which are already operational.

Meanwhile, Pfizer has said it has fully enrolled its COVID vaccine test in 12-15 year olds. According to a recent report, more than 2.5 million cases of COVID in children were reported on January 14, representing about 13% of all cases.

It’s not clear how long it will take to determine if the vaccine is safe for children under 16.
