Two different foldable iPhone prototypes would pass the first quality checks

A new report claims that Foxconn’s foldable iPhone tests consisted of two completely separate designs, and both passed assembler quality control.

After previous rumors that Foxconn is testing a foldable iPhone, a new report says it actually tested two competing designs for Apple. The tests took place at Foxconn’s factory in Shenzhen and are said to have been completed with quality control on both designs.

According to Money UDN, what was tested were not finished phones, but rather the scales of these two folding designs with supposedly screens. The tests were specifically designed to measure the durability of the folding mechanism.

One of the designs would resemble the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, or the Lenovo Moto RAZR, with an internally folding flip-phone-style screen. The other is claimed to be a dual screen model, more like an open book like the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Money UDN speculates that Apple will further evaluate both models and then abandon one.

Apple’s tests of foldable iPhone designs follow both years of rumors and a great many patent applications on the subject. Previous reports on Foxconn’s testing include claims that Apple will release a foldable iPhone in September 2022.

UDN has quite a track record of Apple’s supply chain. It’s noticeably worse at predicting Apple’s future product plans. Thursday’s report is a hybrid of the two.
