Twitter is again blocking some accounts in India following government demands

NEW DELHI— Twitter Inc. said it is reintroducing the restrictions on some accounts in India after the government threatened legal action when the company refused to block hundreds of handles New Delhi called inciting.

Twitter blocked the handles last week at the request of the government, but then reversed its decision. After conducting an investigation, the company said the bills should be allowed.

The Indian government threatened legal action that could have resulted in a fine or imprisonment for Twitter executives responsible for enforcing government guidelines.

On Wednesday, Twitter said it would block most accounts again. It said on his blog that the handles would only be blocked within India and would not include the accounts of journalists, media entities, activists and politicians.

“If we did, it would violate their fundamental right to free speech under Indian law,” the blog post said.
