Twisted Metal Video Game TV Adaptation: Will Arnett, Sweet Tooth

One of the Sony PlayStation’s Most recognizable franchises may soon be popping and exploding on your TV. Turned metal, the chaotic sci-fi demolition derby game, is adapted for the small screen of the writers of the Deadpool movies, and one of the writers of Cobra Kai

The idea for one Turned metal show started to seep in 2019, and now writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland have collaborated with Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai) to crack the case. Reese and Wernick are co-producing with Smith, who will write and show run.

According to Variety, which broke the news, the story follows “an outsider with a motor mouth who is offered a chance for a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he must face ferocious looters driving devastating vehicles and other public road hazards, including a crazy clown … who drives an all-too-famous ice cream truck that fans of the game will be famous for. As Sweet Tooth. Will Arnett’s Electric Avenue manufacturing company is also on board.

Turned metal debuted in 1995 along with the release of the first PlayStation and has been a staple of the platform ever since. While each game has its own variation of the story, the main gameplay is usually just a demolition derby with no restrictions between all kinds of themed vehicles and driven by people with unique, sinister personalities. But instead of crashing into each other, the vehicles have guns and bombs and all kinds of destructive abilities. The last vehicle standing wins.

“We love Twisted Metal in all its twisted insanity, ”Glenn Adilman, executive vice president of comedy development at Sony Pictures Television, told Variety. “Michael Jonathan Smith hit the park with an action-packed, brilliantly funny adaptation and we’re grateful for the support of Rhett, Paul, Will and our friends at PlayStation.”

There’s no word on a timeline for the show or any hints for casting (Variety points out that Arnett can pronounce Sweet Tooth, but no deal exists yet), but with streaming content like Truckasaurus, you’d imagine that this is more likely to land somewhere. then later.
