Welcome to Trevor Lawrence Friday.
The Clemson QB, and presumed No. 1 overall pick in this spring’s draft, will pitch for NFL coaches and scouts today. Lawrence is holding an early Pro Day so he can have labrum surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and be ready for workouts this summer.
The Path to the design special, presented by Verizon, airs today at 10 a.m.ET on NFL Network.
NFL Network’s Jane Slater reported Good morning football that Lawrence will report around 9am to get measurements (height, weight, hand measure, etc.) and then begin a scripting session around 10am ET.
Why does Lawrence pitch when he’s almost certainly going number 1 to Jacksonville?
Ex-NFL QB Jordan Palmer, who teams up with Lawrence, told SI.com’s Albert Breer that the best prospect since Andrew Luck is pitching simply because he loves games.
“The reason he wants to throw is because he loves the ball and has nothing to hide,” said Palmer, who will lead the Pro Day session. “‘They want me to throw, I throw. Yes, I throw for everyone. Sounds great.” In front of him, he could sit there and say, “I’m not doing it and here’s why.” And you also need to understand where I come from, my brother [Carson] was undoubtedly the No. 1 choice, undoubtedly playing in the Senior Bowl and throwing at the combine because, ‘Give me a ball. I would like to participate. ‘ I have nothing to hide. I like to throw.
Trevor is the same kind of man. He likes competitions, has nothing to hide, is confident and likes to do it. It’s very simple for him. It wasn’t even a discussion. ‘
The other perk: We have something to watch and discuss on an otherwise sleepy Friday in February.
Using this extra time to observe Lawrence in action, the Jaguars are sending a contingent to South Carolina this morning
