Trevor Bauer was ready to join Mets after merch fiasco: ‘I’m ready’

If it wasn’t for his agent, Trevor Bauer might have been a Met.

Rachel Luba convinced the NL Cy Young Award winner not to sign with the Dodgers, but she told him to reconsider his decision amid his frustration with merchandise showing up prematurely on his website and suggesting he sign with the Mets.

“It’s f-king over, I’m done,” Luba recalled that Bauer had told her on the bar stool “Start 9” podcastCall the Dodgers, it’s done. It becomes the other team. ”

The “other team” was the Mets. According to Luba, Bauer felt guilty that the merchandise was out there.

“I can’t do that to a fan base,” he told her. “The decision has been made.”

Before notifying the team of his decision, Luba told him to take a walk and think about it further, and not decide based on a mistake that was not his.

When they spoke 10 minutes later, Bauer had changed his mind. He would go on to play for the Dodgers and sign a $ 102 million three-year deal, avoiding the Mets’ three-year offer with a potential of $ 105 million.

Joel Sherman of The Post reported last month that in the last 24 hours of Bauer’s free agency, the Mets believed they had reached an agreement with Bauer.
