A friendly jab thrown at Trevor Bauer by Noah Syndergaard for how he chose the Dodgers over the Mets in free agency turned into a full-blown social media feud between the two pitchers.
Syndergaard, who is recovering from the Tommy John surgery, retweeted a message Friday from the Mets’ official Twitter account for a shot at Bauer, who earlier this month signed a three-year $ 102 million contract with the Dodgers. When retweeting the original post, photos of himself and Rob Gsellman laughing at the spring training, Syndergaard wrote: “And then he said …” I’m sorry I chose another team, but I’m donating to your charities ! “
It was a reference to Bauer apologizing to Mets fans for inadvertently trolling thanks to a glitch that led to Mets autograph merchandise being advertised on his personal website hours before he turned down the franchise. He also agreed to donate $ 10,000 to four New York-based charities.
The excavation of Syndergaard did not suit Bauer and his camp. The Cy Young winner’s agent, Rachel Luba, responded to Syndergaard’s post by tweeting, “Lol, this was an attempt to” cast shadow “… (surprised-faced emoji).”
Bauer’s response was not so jovial.

Bauer, who is not free from controversy interacting with fans on social media, posted screenshots of aggressive responses Syndergaard wrote on an Instagram video in which he threw shirtless last week.
In it, the 28-year-old righty responded to a fan who, a year after doing this, asked him to post shirtless images last spring before he needed surgery and missed all of 2020. Syndergaard decided to write his response, “It’s humid in Florida and I’m chilling out, you idiot.” In another, after a fan wrote that he should put a shirt on “your tool bag,” Syndergaard brought the woman of the person at the call.
“Show your wife,” he wrote. “Guaranteed she wouldn’t want me to put on a shirt … you could really enjoy that, but she’ll be thinking about me.”
Bauer, 30, wrote that Syndergaard “needs to treat fans better” and that there is “no room for personal insults, especially about someone’s wife.”
The former Reds and Indians pitcher is far from a social media saint. In 2019, he harassed a college student on Twitter after calling him “ her least favorite person in sport. Bauer responded by writing “Welcome to the Fan Club” and tweeted at least 17 times, either directly to the women or to others about the fight for three days. Those posts include a photo he found from her timeline of her drinking before she reached the legal age of 21. Later, Bauer apologized and vowed that he would “exercise the responsibility of my public platform in a more responsible way in the future.”
Syndergaard responded to Bauer’s post from his Instagram exchanges on Friday by co-writing “keep digging” a GIF of someone digging a holeBauer’s response was, “See you below.” Thor then told him, “Bring a drone and your mixtape and it’s a deal. #takeajokebro ”- in reference to previous controversies about Bauer. Bauer wrote, “You have a date (handshake emoji).”
At least one of Syndergaard’s teammates thought the whole exchange was funny.
“To be honest, Twitter is all jokes. Lol (shrugging emoji), ”pitcher Marcus Stroman responded on Twitter along with a GIF of a man piloting a drone.
The Mets and Syndergaard will not get their first look at Bauer and the Dodgers until August, starting with a series of three games at Citi Field.
