The Chaos hordes will finally take to the battlefield this year with Total War: Warhammer 3, announced today by Creative Assembly and Sega. Along with the four main flavors of Chaos (Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch), the third game in the strategy series adds polar bear riding Kislev and China analogue Cathay. Here, come watch a Kislev ice witch kick a daemon in the cinematic trailer.
The series has been one of the best strategy games so far, so yes, more please. For the third, the great campaign revolves around “saving or exploiting the power of a dying god.” Today’s announcement reads, “Each race offers a unique journey through the nightmarish Chaos realm, culminating in an endgame that will determine the fate of the world.” It seems irresponsible to put that in my hands.
Creative Assembly is still planning to release a massive map throwing all three games into one campaign, for people who own all three, although they note in an FAQ that “currently our focus is on Total War: Warhammer III. ” The Mortal Empires campaign hit Twarhammer 2 a month after launch, and this makes it sound like Twarhammer 3’s might also follow later.
Total Warhammer 3 is coming to both Epic and Steam, and they plan to port the first two as well. If you already have either of them on Steam, it’s probably best to stick with Steam, as you won’t be able to access the others or their DLC on Epic. So you need all three of them in the same shop to play the combined card and so on. While they “hope” to implement a way for people to link Steam and Epic accounts, don’t count on it. “We cannot currently guarantee this functionality at any time,” they say, “but will continue to work towards it in conjunction with the storefront operators.”
Total War: Warhammer 3 will be released on Steam and the Epic Games Store later this year. At least it will run on Windows at launch, with Mac and Linux versions of Feral Interactive coming “as close to launch day as possible.” They plan to offer a Race Park as an “Early Adopter Bonus” for those who pre-order or purchase within the first week.
Disclosure: Oh hey, our co-founder Alec Meer (RPS in peace) writes for Total Warhammer 3.
