Three signatories are Michigan’s first McDonald’s All-Americans basketball since 2002

The best 2021 recruitment class in Michigan has spawned three McDonald’s All-Americans.

Five-star strikers Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate and four-star guard Kobe Bufkin were named to the 24-player All-American squad on Tuesday afternoon, becoming the first Wolverines signers since Daniel Horton in 2002 to do so.

In the 2020 class, former Michigan five-star striker Isaiah Todd was named a McDonald’s All-American, but he later chose to play professional basketball instead.

Houstan, who played at Montverde Academy in Florida, is Michigan’s highest-ranking commitment at No. 8 overall, according to the 247Sports Composite. The 6-foot-10 Diabate, who played at the IMG Academy in Florida, is ranked No. 18, while Bufkin, a Christian highlight in Grand Rapids, is No. 42 overall.

The seasons of Montverde and IMG Academy are both over, while Grand Rapids finally gave Christian a tip this month. The 6-foot-4 Bufkins is the first Michigan prep to be named after the team since Muskegon’s Deyonta Davis in 2015. Bufkin got off to a strong start, but left Saturday’s game against Grand Rapids Catholic Central with a left wrist injury and didn’t return .

The All-American trio is part of Michigan’s six-member 2021 recruiting class that ranks No. 1 nationally. The class also includes four-star watch Frankie Collins (No. 51); four-star grand piano Isaiah Barnes (No. 104); and three-star attacker Will Tschetter (no. 146).

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the McDonald’s All-American game will not be played for the second consecutive year.
