Three mega vaccination sites open in New York City on Sunday

NEW YORK (WABC) – Three mega vaccination facilities will open in New York City on Sunday. These sites are capable of vaccinating 2,000 people a day when vaccinations are available to the general public.

On Sunday mornings, health workers can get vaccinated by appointment via the city’s website.

These new facilities complement the more than 225 locations now open across the city.

On Monday the vaccine will be made available to group 1b – seniors over 75 years old, teachers and transit workers.

So far, about 150,000 people in the eligible 1a group of nursing homes and health workers in New York City have been vaccinated.

After a war of words with Mayor de Blasio, Governor Cuomo announced on Friday that he would expand 1b’s list of eligible persons to include seniors over 75 – but there isn’t enough to vaccinate them all right away.

“It will take 14 weeks. It will take 14 weeks to do 1a and 1b. Just because the reservations become available, don’t expect everyone to get a reservation right away. The offer will take 14 weeks,” said Governor Cuomo.

Howard Braunstein, 77, from Queens is part of the 1b group and ready to take the vaccine. He’s been home for 10 months with limited trips to the grocery store, and is ready to come back to life and see family again.

From the group 1b eligible on Monday, there will be no priority – first come, first served. It may be April before everyone in both groups who wants a vaccine gets one.

Plus, there is one high school vaccination center, so as long as people are getting vaccines, there are no plans to reopen.

In addition, the Javits Center will open on Wednesday as a vaccine distribution site.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tested positive for COVID-19, along with 463 NYPD members who tested positive for coronavirus this month.

Those who are qualified can register for a vaccine on the city’s website. A telephone reservation system will also be operational from Monday.
