This state now has the worst COVID outbreak in the US.

There has been a subtle dip in the national coronavirus numbers lately. But before celebrating anything, it’s unfortunately not the result of lowercase print – some states will stop normal reporting until the beginning of January. Yet some states have gone against the national trend and have seen a surge over the past week, with one state in particular seeing a deteriorating situation. Now, data shows that California has become home to the worst COVID outbreak in the US. Read on to find out what went wrong on the West Coast, and to learn more about how bad the pandemic is where you live, go to This is How Bad the COVID Outbreak Is in Your Country.

The Golden State took over the unenviable title after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures were updated on Dec. 26. California is now at the top of the national list of daily new cases per capita, given their seven-day average increase from the fourth highest to the highest overall.

Hospitals across California are now succumbing to the unprecedented rush of new cases, with many rationing or planning to triage patients when they arrive. “This team will make the necessary decisions about allocating limited medical resources based on the best possible medical information and will use the same decision criteria that are used nationally and across California for all patient cases,” said Huntington Hospital in Southern California in a statement. released statement, according to ABC News.

In an effort to turn the tide of new infections, California officials announced that stay-at-home orders expiring in most counties are likely to be extended by at least three weeks. The restrictions, which are among the strictest in the US, prohibit people from leaving home or traveling except to run errands, seek medical attention, do individual outdoor exercise or walk pets, Reuters reports.

But California isn’t the only state struggling with a COVID surge. Read on to see which states have been hit hardest, based on data from CovidActNow on Dec. 28.
