Henry James, Strange Romance and Ghosts. These are the DNA of Haunting Bly Manor, and they are the subject of this great (albeit lengthy) video essay.

Ladyknightthebrave creates fascinating, detailed video essays that go deeply into the workings of media. Her latest is an essay on the Netflix show A Haunting of Bly Manor, examining the way death and memory work in the show, examining its influences and thinking about the themes. Interestingly, it also includes a new interview with show creator Mike Flanagan, which provides a compelling insight into the show’s production and thematic engagements.

In particular, this essay does an excellent job in production details and background for a longer close reading of the series. As a sequel to Haunting of Hill House, it’s a fascinating series, and Ladyknight effectively breaks it down. She also has a lot of good information about Henry James, which is good for those of us who didn’t brush up on 19th century horror before starting the show.

I enjoy watching a story up close tells itself, and this is a really good one. It’s good for a lazy weekend. You learn something.
