This is what Duke Philippe of Edinburgh’s last days were like

Fuentes de Palacio assured that in his last days of his life the Duke enjoyed moments of joy and clarity that allowed him to be in the company of Isabel II, they even told two funny anecdotes; one of them, when apparently the duke dropped a few glasses and a servant rushed to pick them up.

“It doesn’t matter,” Prince Philip said, raising his arm, “I’ll do it.” And he did. Another example is when the Queen was heard in the palace to assure her husband refused to use his hearing aid: “It means we will have to shout,” she told officials and royal aides.

After spending 28 days in the hospital last month, the Duke was locked in his room on his return home, although when he felt better he was wearing a shirt and a sweater, pants and shoes, even though he had the had help from an assistant, on several occasions he was still able to do it on his own.

In the palace there were days when he still walked with a stick with difficulty. “Get that thing out of my sight,” he said one day to his assistant who brought him a wheelchair. Still, there were times when he asked to be taken in a chair for some fresh air. It was then that he fell asleep, and there was always Queen Elizabeth next to him.
