This is the ideal wallet based on the Fed looking to borrow money, says a Merrill Lynch veteran

Stocks are looking at another battle Wednesday after some bleak numbers, techies aside. That’s while we wait for the outcome of the last Federal Reserve policy meeting of the year and the progression of an increasingly elusive stimulus deal.

A model portfolio for the next two to five years is our call of the day offering from former Merrill Lynch CEO Harley Bassman. He created and traded a variety of derivative and structured products for 26 years with Merrill Lynch, and is best known for inventing the MOVE index, which measures treasury volatility. He now writes the newsletter Convexity Maven.

He bases his advice on the Fed’s “near-pledge to effectively keep their overnight rates at zero until at least 2023.” To that, Bassman says, “The Fed wants us to borrow, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” but says he prefers leverage risk (borrowed capital) over credit risk.

Another investment move? Refinance your mortgage. “If a $ 300,000 mortgage is refinanced from 3.83% to 2.50%, monthly payments would drop from $ 1,403 to $ 1,185,” he says, adding that rising inflation in the coming years means things will get better. is to record that sooner rather than later.

Bassman also likes real estate investment mortgage funds, which own mortgages exposed to residential and commercial real estate, but not hotels or apartments. The key is that they are using borrowed money instead of taking credit risk. For the same reasons, he is enthusiastic about municipal closed-end bond funds, although they are managed only by well-known executives and avoid credit risk from smaller states or agencies.

is another commodity on his list of investments heading into 2021. “Gold is not a trade; It’s a 20-year power diversification to hedge you against a balloon-sized black swan landing in your backyard. An allotment of 5% has probably been dead money for a long time, but I sleep well at night, ”he says.

His favorite, however, is long-term interest options, which are used to bet on the direction of interest rates. However, these cannot be traded by individual investors for the time being.

Millennials boosted by a tax COVID package may finally fuel inflation, but it’s not clear when. With this option, one can take advantage of the MMT boost to markets with an escape chute for protection, ”said Bassman. MMT, or Modern Monetary Theory, states that governments can borrow and pay for it with new money as needed.
