The Humacao court today found grounds for the arrest of the stepfather and mother of the 2-year-old boy, Dylan Caleb Vega, whose skeleton was found in Humacao.
The director of the Humacao area’s Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC), Teddy Morales, indicated that the charges were filed this morning against Leslie Pagán Díaz, 25, and José E. Santiago Maymí, 31 years old.
Morales indicated that he was charged first degree murder, child abuse and destruction of evidence.
Judge Enid Cristina Rivera García of the Humacao Court of First Instance established the likely cause in the charges filed and issued a global bond of $ 1,500,000 to each of the defendants, which was not lent by either. The preliminary hearing was scheduled for December 30, 2020.
In a press release, the Ministry of Justice stated that the investigation showed that it concerns the child “He was the victim of a pattern of abuse that caused his death.”
“In addition, after the minor’s death, both defendants discarded the child’s body and left it, without notifying the authorities, on the banks of the Patagonia River in Humacao, where his skeleton was found on September 21, 2020 by agents from the Humacao Homicide Division, ”he added.
Morales, for his part, pointed out that “this case consists of documentary, scientific and testimonial evidence”.
However, he declined to comment on the alleged confession the woman allegedly made when she was arrested on September 21 for other events – a robbery.
Later, we will work with the evidence that will be presented at trial, depending on what the defense presents. We have enough evidence to prove the matter without the need for a confession, ”said Morales.
Some of the information that has emerged is that it was the mother who identified the place where the remains were and who led the authorities to find them.
That day, Morales told El Nuevo Día that “we didn’t arrive at the skeleton by accident, we are not fortune tellers. We got information from where the skeleton was, which is not the same as a confession or confession ”.
The child’s stepfather and mother were already in prison at the time after finding grounds for arrest on another case related to theft and gun law violations.
The timing of these charges was largely due to the scientific tests the skeleton had to undergo to confirm the victim’s identity.
It wasn’t until October 21 that the Institute of Forensic Science was able to confirm that they were in fact the remains of a child, after the skeleton was subjected to genetic evaluations by a forensic anthropologist.
