New York- The classic plastic potato toy is getting a new gender-neutral name, simply “Potato Head,” with toy maker Hasbro adding the “Mr.” deleted, the New York Post reported.
The company said Potato Head, which first went on sale nearly 70 years ago, needed a new, modern makeover. The toy’s new nickname will appear on the boxes next year.
Some applauded the change, while others called it half-baked to label a vegetable as “ non-binary. ”
“Mr. Potato Head will always be a potato. Hasbro cannot remove the genitals from a potato that never had one in the beginning,” one observer tweeted.
Others wondered the fate of Mrs. Potato Head, who entered the market in 1953 with traditionally feminine accessories such as headbands and red heels.
“What I want to know is if they are going to remove Ms. Potato Head?” Asked one Twitter user.
There was also no word on Potato Head’s pronoun, or whether he will keep his signature black mustache.
Hasbro’s move comes after several toy manufacturers updated their brands to appeal to today’s kids, including the Barbie doll, which has lost her blonde image and gotten a makeover with more skin tones and body shapes.
