The desire to become queen and represent Puerto Rico made 17 young people wait a year for the Miss World Puerto Rico pageant celebration. Despite the challenges experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, these girls are betting on their dream and decided to move on by taking part in this competition, the final of which will take place on April 24 at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, in a special broadcast that will be broadcast on TeleOnce at 8 p.m.

These young women were said to be part of the election last year, but due to the global health situation, the event was canceled until this year. “Originally it was a group of twenty, but because of the pandemic this group has remained persistent girls. I thank our director Ana Avilés who has been in charge of running the virtual workshops so they can continue, ”said Wilnelia Merced, owner of the local franchise and Miss World 1975.

One of the special features of this competition is that there are five mini competitions to choose different finalists. According to Merced, these events had to take place via the virtual modality this year.

The first mini-competition to take place was the sports competition, in which the young woman from the city of Santa Isabel, Andreína Vega Rosa, was the winner, it was announced at a press conference today. The winners of the other four mini competitions (beauty with purpose, top model, talent and best body) will be announced on the day of the preliminary round, the date of which will be announced shortly.

Merced said the young women barely saw each other in person, the first time last Sunday when they were finally able to share remotely during a photo shoot. This year, the last night of the event will be called “Festival of Beauty and Purpose” to highlight the raison d’être of this competition, which aims to raise awareness among young women of the importance of helping society.

“In this competition we choose those girls who, apart from their physical beauty, show the world their human qualities, their empathy for the noblest causes and possessors of great heart. In Miss World, the winner girl becomes an ambassador for numerous causes sponsored by the organization, which in turn will lead her to visit multiple countries around the world to participate in charity events, ”Merced reiterated.

He added that this year’s winner will be tasked with hosting the international pageant, which will take place in Puerto Rico on December 16, as Puerto Rican Stephanie Del Valle, who became Miss World in 2016, will be the second Puerto Rican is that that crown.

“We are pleased to have time this year to properly prepare the winner who will be our world representative and host. So the young woman who wins, we want her to have all the knowledge of the beautiful places in Puerto Rico and to become a girl who can project herself into the world, ” added Merced, who this year celebrates her 45th birthday. the first Miss. The ex-queen said that during the last night of the event, which will be animated by Fernando Allende, the ten semi-finalists will be announced. Five of them are chosen in the mini competitions and the other five through interviews with the jury.

Wilnelia Merced said they are currently evaluating whether the final will be with or without an audience. If so, it is only the relatives of the candidates and is done by strict invitation.

One of the awards the winner will receive this year is a scholarship from Ana G. Méndez University to earn a master’s degree. The new sovereign would be crowned by the outgoing queen, Daniella Rodríguez, who won the 2019 local election.

Merced was hopeful that the next international Miss World would be crowned on the island among the 17 contestants. “We have a lot of options because there are very beautiful girls, well prepared and we have time for the public to identify with the girl,” he concluded.
