Senate President José Luis Dalmau Santiago, in a radio interview on Tuesday, called for a 14-day ‘lockdown’ or shutdown of most activities in the country to stem the wave of COVID-19 infections.

“If we don’t close the country for 14 days, these cases of COVID-19 will continue to increase,” Dalmau Santiago said in a radio interview with Normando Valentín en la Mañana on Notiuno 630.

“A while ago we were too late to do it (the closing). The medical task force announced three weeks ago that the increases will continue. How can we stop it if we don’t close? Asked the president of the senate.

“I know there is an important sector of the economy that we need to pay attention to, but what’s the point if we get full hospitals and people keep getting infected and dying,” said Dalmau Santiago.

“We have to evaluate this calmly, but I am sure we will have to close. Cases keep increasing. They are up more today than yesterday (according to the Ministry of Health reports), and unfortunately will increase more tomorrow than today, ”concluded Dalmau Santiago.
