Researchers at Imperial College London’s Department of Mathematics have now identified the most likely group of people who spread these virus-laden particles.
According to the new study published in Scienceit is people between the ages of 20 and 49 who are responsible for at least 70% of coronavirus transmission in the US. The scientists found that students up to 19 years old contributed only 15% to the COVID-19 transmission. The study also indicates that the most affected age group were over 50s, who recorded the most number of deaths during the late summer and fall of 2020.
“This addresses this underlying false story … that if you guard the most vulnerable, you can let the virus run free,” said Dr. John Brownstein ABC news. “If you let it predominate in the younger age groups, it will still affect the elderly and vulnerable groups.” Brownstein is an epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital and was not involved in the study.
The researchers relied on mathematical and mobility data to model COVID-19 transmission and found that early and middle-aged movement is the leading cause of infections.
“Certain age groups, such as young adults, dropped their guard,” said Brownstein. “[The report] places more responsibility on those in the younger age groups who were trying to live a normal life and had a little bit of COVID fatigue. “
The health expert also addressed school reopenings, saying the report indicates that children are not the leading cause of infections.
