A total of 21 municipalities are marked in red as part of the most recent transmission risk analysis from COVID-19, meaning that none of its campuses will be able to reopen next week, even if they have the infrastructure and capacity to support the protocols of the Health Department

“For schools that want a hybrid modality (face-to-face and distance learning) one of the criteria is that the municipality is not at the red level. It must also comply with safety for students, teachers and anything else the protocol establishes, “said the designated health minister. Carlos Mellado, referring to last week’s guidelines.

Mellado added that all schools must be equally registered in it BioPortal of the agency, a requirement that all public schools already meet.

Tomorrow, the Education department Make official the list of public schools that could open early next month.

A list circulated yesterday showed that the Ministry of Education believes there are 187 structurally suitable schools to provide face-to-face education.

In total, the 21 cities in the red level have 49 schools that would be structurally ready to open. This way there would be 138 schools with potential for reopening in the early stages of returning to face-to-face classes.

Given concerns that schools reopening will have to close due to a sudden increase in infections in a particular municipality, Mellado said the current transmission trend in the country is down.

“What is red will turn a different color (depending on how we are in the pandemic so far,” said the head of health.

Mellado said that at the island level, Puerto Rico is at the orange level, the third of the four risk levels. Most municipalities currently appear in yellow, the second highest risk level.

The only municipalities in the blue level, the ones with the lowest risk, are Manatí, Corozal, Canóvanas, Patillas, Ceiba, Vieques and Culebra.
