Pet owners are increasingly seeking to improve the welfare and quality of life of their animals and one of the topics of special interest is health.
That’s why prepaid medical plans and aid plans have been designed to ensure that companion animals receive good care at every clinic in the country with professional experts.
In this sense, Diego Uribe, commercial manager of Vetplus, said that for six years they have designed a model of prepaid medicine with the participation of an actuary, the project was presented and it is evolving, “for now we are the only drug company as as prepaid in Colombia because the other aid plans are ”.
This plan works the same as with humans, you pay a few monthly installments and you have the right to use the best services in veterinary clinics, it also does not cover pre-existence and when the animal is treated a bonus must be paid.
The company has two models of clinics, some of which have an agreement with VetPlus to provide services to their clients in the way of an IPS, where the person comes, presents the card, asks the clinic for approval and if approved they treat it pet and Vetplus. It pays the medical center and the patient pays the bonus.
The other model is the clinic which has no agreement, but the customer can access it as long as it is authorized, but in this case a refund will be made. “This means that customers across the country have plenty of veterinary clinics at their disposal,” said Uribe.
The dog plans start from $ 63,000 to $ 160,000 a month depending on the breed, size and age, for example, a puppy won’t get very sick and the costs are lower. In the case of cats, it’s between $ 50,000 and $ 90,000.
These plans cover everything from the puppy’s vaccination to the pet’s cremation, through surgeries, hospitalizations, lab tests, ultrasounds, among others.
However, companies such as Pets Colombia also offer prepaid medications with plans that can be tailored to different budgets. For example, they have one that costs $ 444,000 per year and can be paid in monthly installments of $ 37,000, but they also have one in which the monthly payment is $ 31,990.
However, when you look at the coverage, it is more like a health insurance policy because you have telephone consultations on things from medical guidance to legal issues for third party damages; but it also covers medical expenses due to an accident or illness, assistance with sterilization and assistance in the event of loss of the pet.
Something similar is happening with EPS Pets which offers more than prepaid drugs preventative drugs that, as the company states, “will be cheaper than corrective drugs, so you get a double benefit, by receiving the services of the contracted plan, you very much avoid corrective procedures expensive ”.
In EPS Pets, there are plans that cost more than $ 3.3 million a year for dogs over the age of seven and include vaccines, deworming, and consultations.
Seguros Mundial, for its part, has basic insurance that costs $ 20,000 per month and covers medical costs for accidents, euthanasia services due to illness, and funeral support.
All care plans (see chart) have different prices, trying to fit every budget. In addition, the costs vary depending on whether it is a dog or a cat and, among other things, depending on the age and breed.
