SUMMARY FORECASTS

At night the cracks in the snow disappeared and so did the sleet. We had one last round of snow before the dry air rushed into the storm.

PHOTOS: First snow storm of the season

The heart of the Interstate 78 corridor seemed to receive between 20 and 30 inches of total snowfall, while those in the north in the Poconos and far northwest New Jersey saw a foot or a little more. The totals fell back in the 4 to 8 inch range, it generally seems as you make your way further south, to Bucks and Montgomery Counties, to a line between Trenton and Philly. The amounts dropped drastically to just a few inches low once you were on I-95 and south and east. This was in large part due to a transition to rain that lasted for a while.

You only see a few gusts this morning.

Even though we will see some sun today, it will remain chilly because of that wind. Be careful when driving along a flat field as the wind will blow the fresh, fluffy snow onto the road, which can make it slippery.

Tonight the wind stops and then it gets cold. Temperatures drop into the teens under the tidy skies.

We are back to 32 and sunny on Friday. At least there is no wind chill.

But it gets really cold on Friday night. We fall into the single digits!

DETAILED FORECAST

THURSDAY

We’ll have some gusts this morning as our coastal storm recedes. A brisk northerly breeze will last for a while, but gradually diminish as our storm gets further away. It’s a cold day, so don’t expect much to melt, even though the sun may appear a few times later in the day. Highlights are only in the low 30s, with freezing chills during the day. Lows fall in the teens at night, with clear skies and deep snowdrifts.

Shoveling and clearing: how heavy is the snow from this storm?

FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY

The high pressure increases, the wind decreases and the cold air comes in at the beginning of the weekend. Don’t expect the snow to melt so quickly, with midday highs in the low to mid-30s and nighttime lows deep into the teens and even single digits in spots on Friday evenings, thanks to clear skies, light winds and a deep snow cover. On Sunday a weak cold front is approaching from our west, causing the clouds to increase. We’re getting a little warmer for the front as the highs come back to nearly 40 degrees in the upper 30s … more seasonal for this time of year. The front can bring a rain or snow shower late in the day or at night, but at the moment we don’t expect this to be a major problem.
