The Vatican assures it cannot bless homosexual unions because God “cannot bless sin”

Roma – The Vatican ruled Monday that the Catholic Church cannot bless gay couples because God “cannot bless sin.”

The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Vatican office that deals with orthodoxy, formally responded on Monday to whether Catholic religious can bless homosexual alliances.

The answer, contained in a two-page explanation, published in seven languages ​​and authorized by Pope Francis, was “negative.”

The decree distinguished between acceptance into the church and blessings to homosexuals, which it sanctioned, and blessings to their unions, which it rejected.

The Vatican states that homosexuals should be treated with dignity and respect, but that homosexual sex is “intrinsically disorderly”. Catholic teachings indicate that marriage between a man and a woman is part of the divine plan and is for the purpose of creating new life.

Since gay couples are not part of that plan, they cannot be blessed within the church, the document said.

“The presence in these relationships of positive elements, which in themselves are valued and appreciated, cannot justify these relationships and turn them into legitimate objects of ecclesiastical blessing, since the positive elements exist in the context of a union that is not ordered by the maker’s plan “, came the answer.

God “does not bless and cannot bless sin: He blesses sinful man so that he can recognize it as part of his love plan and allow himself to be changed by Him,” the text added.

Francisco is in favor of legal protection for gay couples, but with regard to the civil sphere, not within the church. He made those comments in an interview with Mexican television channel Televisa in 2019, although the Vatican cut them off until they appeared in a documentary last year.
