The United States will begin to require people flying in from the UK to test negative for Covid-19 no more than 72 hours before departure, the CDC said in a late statement Thursday.

President Donald Trump will sign the order on Friday, Christmas Day, according to the statement. It comes into effect Monday.

Earlier this week, the UK said it had identified a new strain of Covid-19 that appears to be spreading faster. Dozens of countries quickly restricted travel from the UK to keep the species from entering their own borders.
