ORLANDO, Fla. – The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida is up by 7,000, health officials reported Sunday.
The new cases reported on Sunday brought the state’s number to more than 1.25 million since the outbreak began earlier this year.
More than 21,200 Floridians have now died from COVID-19 – with more than 70 new deaths added to the death toll on Sunday.
The number of people tested for COVID-19 has been significantly lower in the past two days, and it remains to be seen if gatherings over the Christmas weekend will increase the number of state infections, as was the case after the Thanksgiving holiday.
More than 171,000 people were tested for the virus on Friday and Saturday – dramatically lower than the 343,000 tested in the two days before.
According to data from the State Department of Health, more than 6,300 people were in hospital on Sunday because of the virus.

Cases
The Florida Department of Health reported 7,391 new cases on Sunday, bringing the state’s total total to 1,271,979 cases since March. The new cases include Thursday and Friday totals.

Deaths
Florida reported 77 new virus deaths on Sunday. At least this means Statewide, 21,514 people have died as a result of the coronavirus, including 302 non-residents who died in Florida.
Hospital admissions
From Sunday afternoon there are currently 5,912 people hospitalized in Florida with the virus, according to the State Agency for Health Care Administration.
Since March In Florida, 61,459 people have been hospitalized after complications from the coronavirus. That number includes the 171 people recently hospitalized for the virus, according to the Health Department’s Daily Report.
Positivity rate
The percentage of positive results ranged from 7.88% to 9.83% in the past two weeks and was 9.69% on Saturday.
Vaccinations
The Florida Department of Health recently began publishing a daily report on COVID-19 vaccines being administered statewide. As of Sunday, 118,764 people have been vaccinated in Florida.
