LIMA (Sputnik) – Peru’s private health system has collapsed as if to help the public care for patients affected by COVID-19, according to the Peruvian Society of Intensive Medicine (Sopemi).

“The health system collapse continues. We don’t have the capacity for the IC bedside system [unidades de cuidados intensivos], the hospital beds have also collapsed. As for the private part, it can no longer support the public sector because it also has no capacity or reserves, they are no longer curtailment, ‘said Jesús Valverde, president of Sopemi, in statements to local radio RPP.

Likewise, the head of the Sopemi pointed out that approximately 4,000 beds are currently required to cover regular hospital demand and that there are 2,000 people on the waiting list to access an IC bed.

On the other hand, Valverde said the number of doctors admitted to the hospital “has decreased significantly” after being vaccinated against the coronavirus as a priority.

To date, Peru records 55,489 deaths from the respiratory disease and 1,659,707 infected.
