The Senate gives the governor until this afternoon to withdraw Maritere Brignoni’s nomination to the Supreme Court

The delegation of New progressive party (PNP) in the Senate, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vazquez Garced, until 5:30 p.m. to approve the appointment of Judge Maritere Brignoni as examining judge of the High Council.

“If he doesn’t, we’ll vote him by rejecting him.”said Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz as he took turns at today’s special session.

At the moment, Brignoni has only eight of the 16 votes to be confirmed, namely those of the penepés senators Carmelo Ríos, Miguel Romero, William Villafañe, Migdalia Padilla, Luis Daniel Muñiz, Miguel Laureano, Carlos Rodríguez Mateo, Axel ‘Chino ” Roque and Henry Neumann.

“The other members of the delegation are not in favor of that appointment, unless the minority colleagues want to give him the vote for the confirmation of Ms Maritere Brignoni. While she holds a position on the Court of Appeals, as an act of deference, with the same deference that the governor dealt with the Puerto Rico Senate in the press conference she held on Sunday, we say publicly, you have until 5:30 p.m. to withdraw the appointment or at 5:30 p.m., the Senate votes on that appointment and rejects itRivera Schatz said.

He assured that at the meeting every legislator voted “freely” on the nomination of Brignoni, announced yesterday, Sunday, by the governor along with that of public accountant Kermit Lucena Zabala, whose nomination had previously been unanimously rejected.

“We are going to allow the governor until 5:30 pm, as an act of deference, to revoke the nomination of Ms. Maritere Brignoni as an assistant supreme court judge,” the legislative leader said of the penepé caucus decision.

Since late last week, it was announced that Brignoni did not have the votes for his confirmation. In fact, The new day She learned that the first president was given three names – all women – to occupy the seat she will leave at the Supreme Court on Dec. 24, Anabelle Rodríguez. However, Vázquez Garced chose to submit the Senate’s advice and consent to Brignoni.

The names he had for consideration were those of the judges of the Court of Appeal Ivelisse Domínguez Irizarry, Aida Nieves Figueroa and Grace Grana Martínez.
