HELSINKI (AP) – Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has tested positive for COVID-19 and says she will quarantine herself until she recovers from the virus.

Kallas, 43, who became the Baltic states’ first female head of government in January, said late Monday that she was feeling fine, apart from a mild fever and had developed no other symptoms.

“I keep a close eye on my health and stay at home until I recover,” Kallas said in a Facebook post, adding that she would continue to perform the prime minister’s duties from home, including holding cabinet and other meetings. at a distance.

Estonia, a country of 1.3 million inhabitants, has seen a significant worsening of the coronavirus situation in recent weeks, and the country’s health care and hospitals are increasingly struggling to accommodate COVID-19 patients with current resources .

The country registered 1,281 new cases of coronavirus daily on Monday, bringing the total to 86,086 with 728 deaths. Authorities say 711 coronavirus patients are being treated in hospitals across the country.

The 14-day reporting rate of newly reported COVID-19 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was 1,465, which is currently one of the highest figures in Europe.
