The new Apple TV 4K comes with HDMI 2.1, Thread wireless technology

Earlier today, Apple introduced a new Apple TV 4K box (and a redesigned Siri remote that should be easier to use), and a closer look at the spec sheet reveals a few more details about what it can do.

To confirm previous rumors, this box has an HDMI 2.1 video output, but as 9to5Mac points out, despite code leaks reporting support for a 120Hz mode, the device’s “high frame rate HDR” will come out at launch at 60 FPS. That could change with the next version of tvOS – or once 4K TVs aren’t that picky with their support – but it’s something to keep an eye out for.

Another thing to watch out for as Dan Moren noted on Twitter, is that this is the first Apple TV box with Thread built-in. Thread is a low-power mesh network technology for home automation devices with the support of a number of large companies, and they plan to use it to support Project CHIP (Connected Home over IP), an interoperability standard for smart homes.

Thread support has been limited to a few devices so far, but it could make this box a lot more useful as a hub for your future smart home. The HomePod mini also includes Thread technology, but the now-decommissioned original HomePod doesn’t, which may be part of why it got the ax and could be featured in upcoming devices.
