The modified GameCube keyboard is the controller of my dreams

In 2002 Nintendo released a Ridiculouslooking GameCube controller with a keyboard embedded in it so that Phantasy Star Online players could type to their friends. In 2021 someone modified it into an equally impractical but much nicer custom keyboard that I wish I could use type all my shitposts

“You thought the gamecube keyboard was a joke,” author HolyChipmunk recently wrote on the Keyboard subreddit. a message sharing their project that was first noticed by PCGamesNInspired by the build of another mud from a few years ago, HolyChipmunk has some of the the original plastic of the controller keyboard to make room for the new, high-quality aluminum plate and Preonic circuit board. Here are the full specs:

  • Keyboard: Preonic placed in a Sammy Gamecube Keyboard Controller
  • Case material: 18-year-old Nintendo plastic
  • Plate: aluminum box mounted
  • Switches: Lubed Glorious Pandas
  • Stabilizer: Durock v1 lubricated with 205g0 and dielectric grease
  • Attenuation: none
  • Keycaps: DSA Vilebloom

HolyChipmunk took it a step further, replacing the existing GameCube controller sticks and buttons with custom ones that perfectly match the Vilebloom color scheme. Best of all, the whole thing works. HolyChipmunk demonstrated how to switch from typing messages to playing Super Smash Bros. Melee in a video on YouTube

The battle between gamepads and keyboards has has been done for years by people with too much time, but the solution has been in front of us all along. Many PC games now support different controllers and many console games now support the use of a mouse and keyboard. But why choose when you can get the best of both worlds in the super luxurious looking, decades-old GameCube controller.
