The mayor of Broward says the health department will vaccinate about 20,000 residents per week at 8 sites

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward County Mayor Steve Geller held a press conference at the Broward Governmental Center Tuesday morning to discuss the district health department’s vaccination efforts for COVID-19 and the problems that have occurred with the website.

The Broward County Department of Health has currently opened three locations where seniors 65 and older can receive the vaccine.

The sites are only accessible to those who book an appointment online through browardcovidvaccine.com, however, the website has been experiencing issues since its launch last week, leaving many people frustrated.

Geller said the website crash is due to the large number of people who have tried to book an appointment and said more appointments will be available as more vaccination sites open.

According to the mayor, the health department plans to open eight locations and vaccinate about 20,000 people per week – possibly more.

“Each new Department of Health facility will reopen the Broward County website for new reservations for the first three weeks at that location,” Geller said. “Also, the Florida Department of Health in Broward will reopen the website while they vaccinate every week so they always stay about three weeks ahead.”

Below is a list of the vaccination sites currently offered by the Department of Health in Broward County:

>Tradewinds Park, 3600 West Sample Road, Coconut Creek.

>Vista View Park, Southwest 142nd Avenue, Davie.

>Markham Park, 160001 West State Road 84, Sunrise.

According to Geller, the Florida Department of Emergency Management has set up vaccination capsules at the following three senior condominium communities:

  • Century Village in Deerfield Beach
  • Kings Point in Tamarac
  • Wynmoor Village in Coconut Creek

Hundreds of people lined up at the site in Tamarac on Monday, and some came out early on Tuesday.

The Kings Point team told Local 10 News that things went smoothly on Tuesday.

They will go through the process of registering. We check for symptoms, make sure there are no symptoms that are preventing them from getting the vaccine today, and then do a basic health check, ”said Christopher Todd, a Florida Department of Health representative.

Todd said those administering the vaccine will sit the patient for 15 to 30 minutes after receiving the vaccine to make sure they don’t experience an allergic reaction.

Geller said there are a limited number of vaccines available at each of the condominium locations, and they are only available to residents. Each community establishes its own procedures for administering the vaccines and how they can register to get one.

The mayor said the Broward County Department of Health has already administered vaccines to all nursing homes in the area and will start administering the second doses to residents starting Tuesday. Nursing home residents who have missed the first dose can also receive their first dose on Tuesday.

CVS and Walgreens will administer the vaccines in assisted living facilities.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will provide an update on Miami-Dade’s vaccination plan Tuesday at 3 p.m.
