A Republican member of the West Virginia House of Representatives has been indicted in connection with a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump who raided the Capitol earlier this week, the Justice Department said Friday.
Del. Derrick Evans had filmed himself and others entering the Capitol on Wednesday. “We’re in! Keep moving, baby!” Evans said in a video posted on social media.
Evans was charged with entering the Capitol illegally.
Evans’ lawyer said Thursday that Evans “did not commit a criminal act that day” and that he will not resign.
The riot broke out shortly after a crowd of Trump supporters arrived at the Capitol after a rally where the president encouraged those in attendance to fight him in his bid to prevent Joe Biden from being confirmed as the next president of the United States .
Congress suspended confirmation of the electoral college’s vote on Wednesday afternoon after crowds of people invaded the Capitol. But a joint session of Congress on Thursday morning confirmed Biden’s election.
