The government’s advice to pregnant women in the 1950s is under attack

The Seoul City of Pregnancy and Childbirth Information Center has published the guidelines on the Jan. 5 website, including instructions to “prepare instant foods such as curry, black bean paste, and soup so that the husband, who is unfamiliar with cooking, can use them easily.”

The guidelines also said that pregnant women should “put undergarments, socks, shirts, handkerchiefs, and outfits in the drawer for the husband and children to wear for 3 to 7 days while you are in the hospital,” and recommended a hair band. “so you don’t look confused because you won’t be able to wash your hair for a while.”

While some parts of the guidelines remain online, the points that came in for criticism have recently been removed. Screenshots of the original version, however, continue to circulate on social media.

The advice also suggested that women lose weight by doing household chores such as washing dishes and cleaning.

“Extending your hand forward as you sweep the floor can stretch the back, shoulder, and arm muscles,” read the guidelines.

“Hang out clothes you wore before you got married or small clothes you would like to wear after giving birth and look at them if you want to eat more than you need or if you want to skip exercise,” they continued.

Shocked South Koreans started a petition asking for the officer responsible for the post to be punished and to issue a public apology.
